About this website

Welcome to the website of “Promise Park,” a joint project by Moon Kyungwon and YCAM that is part of our continued research and creation of “future park” themed works since 2013. On the general theme of future functions and meanings for human beings – and eventually ecosystems at large – of ”parks” that have existed in all ages in cities around the globe as intersections of man and nature, we have repeatedly conducted studies together with specialized researchers. This is where you can find the results of our considerations revolving around new types of public space.

The articles and other content posted on this website are extracts and edited selections from the publication "Promise Park" (workroom press / published July 2017) that details the activities of this project.

Promise Park
Future Platform towards Collective Intelligence

“What will parks be like in the future?” This question was the starting point for the Promise Park Project (PPP), which has been undertaken by the artist MOON Kyungwon, in partnership with the Yamaguchi Center forArts and Media (YCAM). The creative process has involved the formation of an interdisciplinary working group consisting of experts from a variety of fields, including artists, researchers, city planners, and engineers, who have produced collaborative works while engaging in research and discussion concerning the parks of the future. The group held research showcases and workshops, culminating in the presentation of the fruits of their work in the form of an exhibition. This book is a compilation of the project’s output over the three years from 2013 through 2015.

Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media [YCAM]

Cultural-arts complex in Yamaguchi at the westernmost point of Japan’s main island Honshu. Since opening in 2003 as a complex incorporating exhibition spaces, a theater hall, a movie theater, and the city library, YCAM has been inviting artists from Japan and abroad to produce and exhibit original works in long-term residencies. Works created at YCAM this way have been shown at places around the world, and received great international acclaim. The unique creative approach across the fields of art, science and information technology involves the YCAM InterLab research and development team of technically trained experts, whose technical suggestions are eventually realized by artists with overall support from the curatorial team. Technologies developed in the creative processes are made available to the public via open-source licensing, while effort is also being put in the popularization of devised technologies, and in the development of media educational contents.
